Pour revenir à l’origine de ces Racines, il faut donc imaginer ce marmot qui dansait et chantait en écoutant les disques de reggae de son grand frère dans son village Ivoirien.
Quarante plus tard, le gamin a bien grandi. Tiken Jah Fakoly est devenu une icône sur le continent africain, et l’artiste de reggae francophone le plus reconnu dans le monde, avec un demi-million de disques vendus en France, une Victoire de la Musique en 2003, et un concert à Bercy en 2011. Il a chanté devant des centaines de milliers de personnes autour de la planète, avant de ressentir soudain le besoin de revenir aux sources de sa propre musique. « Back to the roots », comme disent les yardis.
Plus concrètement donc, tout a débuté par des sessions dans le studio Tuff Gong de Bob Marley, temple mythique du reggae roots. Tiken Jah y a ses habitudes depuis Françafrique en 2002. Cette fois, il était accompagné du directeur artistique Sylvain Taillet et du réalisateur anglais Jonathan Quarmby (Ziggy Marley, Finley Quaye, Benjamin Clementine), aux manettes sur cet album.
Ils enregistrèrent avec les légendes vivantes de l’île jamaïcaine : Sly & Robbie pour la rythmique, Mikey Chung à la guitare, et Robbie Lyn aux claviers, quatre virtuoses du genre qui jouent ensemble depuis des décennies, au sein de Black Uhuru et dans le groupe de Peter Tosh dans les années 70 par exemple. Si le percussionniste Sticky Thompson était encore de ce monde, il aurait complété cette équipe de all-stars ayant façonné les albums reggae de Serge Gainsbourg.
Ajoutez au casting les chanteurs Ken Boothe, Max Romeo, Daddy U-Roy, et la jeune Jah9, et vous obtenez ce que Kingston et le reggae roots ont de plus précieux à offrir.
