S’ils se sont d’abord fait connaître par leurs sautillants concerts électro-punks, s’ils forment à eux quatre, entourés de leurs amis, une sympathique tribu, Salut c’est cool doit surtout être considéré aujourd’hui comme un collectif artistique, qui évolue entre l’art du gros son, les voix fluettes de la poésie et le bricolage vidéo-numérique. Sous des allures désinvoltes, amateuristes voire même décérébrées tant ils cultivent volontiers les figures de l’idiotie, Salut c’est cool mène à l’évidence une expérimentation poussée d’un art qui néglige le système de l’art contemporain, qui ignore les frontières du haut culturel et du bas populaire, du réel et du virtuel, de l’art et la vie pour reprendre le grand thème des avant-gardes artistiques du XXe siècle dont ils sont un prolongement à l’âge du post-internet et de You Tube. Vantant « leur liberté jouissive et déconcertante », Stéphane Delorme écrit dans les Cahiers du Cinéma que « le seul genre dans lequel opère salut c’est cool, c’est peut-être l’hymne : hymne au monde, à la nature, aux objets, aux formes, aux gens, à tout ».
